Groundhog Day, Traffic & Squirrels
Categories: Animals, Weather

When I was driving Lily to school this morning the radio reminded us that today was Groundhog Day. Lily said she had heard of it but wasn’t exactly sure what it meant. I told her about Punxsautawney Phil who lives in Punxsutawney, PA. She asked me to spell Punxsutawney… yeah right. Then she asked me to repeat the word like 5 times. She wanted to know why they use a groundhog and not another animal like a rabbit or a hampster. I told her about the movie with Bill Murray. Lily is movie crazy, she will watch anything… and especially likes the 80′s and 90′s comedy’s that we watch. I told her I would check U-verse today and record it if it’s on there.

I am not sure if I have ever told you guys this before but her school is about 10 miles away from our house. Next year I am going to re-register her through our address and her school will be about 1/4 of a mile away, but for now she is registered through her dad’s address. Her commute to school takes us down a major highway, on to an interstate and then through a major construction zone (a very sucky 1 lane road that seems like it will never be done). Needless to say we hit lots of traffic along the way. We leave at about 7:15 every morning and she gets there right around 7:35. This morning was a little bit different… traffic was heavier and there was a dense fog as far as you could see (ok… you couldn’t really see). After I drop her off it usually takes me about 20 minutes to get back home. Today it seems that due to fog and a little bit of wet stuff falling from the sky (I am pretty sure that San Antonio drivers are still not sure what that stuff coming out of the sky is) it made people drive like idiots. The construction zone that usually takes me about 5 minutes to get through was completely backed up and it took me 35 minutes to go about 2 miles… it was so slow that I was able to put the truck in park and snap this picture in the rear view mirror.

Usually when your driving down the road here you can see very far…. not today. In the end it took me about an hour and 20 minutes round trip. The funny thing is that I didn’t see a single accident or anything along the way… just slow slow slow drivers.

Ok enough about groundhogs and traffic, lets talk about the squirrels. I’ve told you countless times that we have a lot of them in the backyard. Well last week after I filled up the bird feeder I rolled up the bag and left it on the back porch. Not to long later Lily came running to me to tell me that the squirrels were trying to get into the birdseed bag. I went outside and sure enough they were trying to chew through the bag. I told Lily we would show them who the boss was and I put the seed inside of a plastic container… squirrel proof, right? The next day JP said “What’s in that plastic container on the porch?”. I said “Birdseed”. He said “Oh ok, cause a squirrel just pushed it off the bench”. For the next couple days I would put the container back where it was and then not to long later a squirrel would push it back off again…. it was like a little game I was playing with them. Who’s the smart one? Well a couple days ago I was looking out the window and I noticed that the squirrels made a mess of the dirt that was in the pots of some plants that died in the freeze in December.

When I went out to clean it up I saw that instead of pushing the container off of the bench the squirrels have now started chewing on the container. Now I can’t help but wonder… who is smarter? Me or the squirrels?

The squirrels always win. They are more stubborn than a pollock.
