Let me tell you a story that goes back to September 2007. When my father was starting to get very sick I took Lily with me back home to Michigan for a week. I remember this trip really well because it was the last time I saw my dad alive. We spent the week mostly hanging out at home and doing nothing but spending as much quality time with my dad as we could. I was living in Seattle at the time so the day before my flight I asked my dad if he wanted anything from Seattle. He jokingly told me that if he was feeling better he would do anything for some fresh salmon and crab. He kinda laughed after he said it but after I hung up the phone it got me thinking. I headed down to the market and had them pack some fish and crab on ice so that I could take it home with me. The next afternoon for lunch we had a seafood feast. I remember my Busia telling me that this was the first time she had ever had fresh crab.
I remember that my niece Isable was just a little baby.
And we went Halloween costume shopping with my little brother Paul. I still love this picture.
I have told you guys a bunch of times that we spent a lot of time on the porch swing at my dad’s house. Lots of time out there while we were growing up. Even Lily remembers being out there.. check out this picture of her sleeping on it during this trip.
I feel the need to add this picture because it is the very last picture that I ever had taken with my dad.
So one afternoon while my father was in bed resting my Busia come over and we sat on the porch swing for a long time talking. We talked about this and we talked about that. She told me stories about the past. We probably sat out there for an hour or so just blah, blah, blah. During the course of our conversation she asked me if they sold Mars Bars in Seattle. I kinda thought it was an odd question until she told me that she has been looking for them in the stores that she goes to and she can’t find them anywhere. I told her that I would take a look when I got back to Seattle. After I got back to Seattle I did a little online research and discovered that Mars moved out of the country and no longer sold their candy here. That same week a friend of mine was headed up to Canada and I asked him if he would check to see if they sold Mars Bars. Sure enough when he got back in town he handed me like 5 candy bars. I saved them for a couple months and sent them to Busia for Christmas with a note that I found them in Canada.
Fast forward to a couple days ago. JP and I were standing in line in a little convenient store in Monterey, CA. All of the sudden I said “They sell Mars Bars here”. JP was like “Yeah, so what?” so I told him my story and we bought some to send to her. When I was in the post office store I texted this picture to JP and he said “Major brownie… err… Mars Bar points!”
If you look closely at the label you will see that it says “Made in Poland”. The only English on the actual wrapper is that part that says Mars.
