We have all heard the term Spring Cleaning but have you ever heard of Fall Cleaning? This is exactly what I have been doing this week. As I have told you before we have a pretty big backyard and there is a lot going on back there. I actually just used the compass on my phone and it told me the front of the house faces East and the back faces West. If you walk out on the back deck you can see that our backyard is on a slope with the highest point on the right which is North and the lowest part on the left which is South. That explains why when you see pictures out by the pool the deck is at an angle. It’s kinda funny cause we have always considered ourself as having an in ground pool but maybe it is actually an above ground pool. Because we live on top of a hill we have a nice breeze constantly blowing through our backyard. The breeze is especially nice when your laying out at the pool in 100° weather! Anyway the other day I was standing in the backyard I started looking at the deck. Nice looking deck, right? We have spent many hours sitting out on the deck and I love it!
Well when the wind comes and any trash comes blowing in our yard where do you think it goes? I had never even thought about it until I looked under the deck today. I figured it was time to venture under there and get it all cleaned up. To the best of my knowledge it has never been cleaned out under there. I knew from watching Lily and her friends play that I can get under the deck from the other side if I sneek between two of the bushes. It is kinda hard to see in the picture but if you walk right up to it and push the branches to the side you can get right in there.
This is what it looks like right when you step through the bushes. I was a little bit scared of any living things that I might find under there. I did find an empty bees nest but nothing alive. Wait.. do mosquitos count? I got at least 3 bites if not more while I was under there because I found a couple things with standing water in them.
I was amazed by how much stuff was under there. Good thing I brought a garbage bag with me when I went in. I found probably like 10 plastic bags, a couple cans, lighters, cigarette butts, toys, balls that I know were used to play games in the pool, bubble wands, and that is just to name a few.
The strangest thing I found was this. I don’t know what it is but I threw it away. I figured if its been under there for that long no one will miss it.
As you go deeper and deeper under the deck it gets smaller and smaller. The last part is so small that I had to get a rake to try to get everything because I didn’t dare crawl on my hands and knees.
While I was using the rake from the outside of the deck I unearthed a sprinkler head that I am pretty sure has never been able to work correctly because it is totally buried.
In the end I ended up with an entire kitchen garbage bag full of crap to throw away. Now it kinda makes me wonder if anyone else has ever looked under their deck?
