Trying New Things

For my entire adult life I was under the impression that I didn’t like grapefruit. I would hear the word grapefruit and cringe. I think it goes back to my childhood when I would eat them with a huge pile of sugar on top but never really enjoy the taste. The funny thing is that I really like Squirt pop which is grapefruit flavor and I love love love the Origins body wash and lotion which are grapefruit scented. A couple weeks ago when we were in San Francisco I learned that I like grapefruit juice mixed with gin but I still wasn’t to sure about the actual grapefruit itself. When I was at the grocery store last Friday I bought two grapefruits. They sat in a bowl on the counter and I would look at them but never pick them up. Today I finally decided to get crazy and give it a try. I sliced it down the middle and gave it a taste. The taste was pretty good but I thought it could be a little bit sweeter so I added just a dusting of sugar. Holy wow!┬áI totally discovered my new favorite breakfast fruit!

I also have another fruity discovery I want to share with you. I found a recipe┬ánamed “Endless Summer Salad” and I made it with our dinner tonight.

You will need:

  • A large bowl
  • 1/4 of a watermellon
  • 1/2 of a cucumber
  • 1/2 of a red, orange or yellow pepper
  • A few leaves of fresh Basil
  • 1/2 a cup of goat cheese (the recipe called for feta I’m not a big fan)
  • 1/2 a cup of Watermellon Vinaigrette

Toss it all together and you have heaven in a bowl! Seriously this stuff is silly good!!

Grapefruit is good stuff. I’m still not sure about that salad but maybe I’ll give it a try. Can you buy watermelon vinaigrette?

Try broiling the grapefruit (with a dusting of sugar on it) for a few mins next time…the sugar kinda caramelizes and the result is delish :) You’ll just want to keep an eye on it though – too long and the sugar burns!

Vanessa – They have it at our grocery. You should check to see if they have it at yours.
    Sarah – That sounds good!

So now I have two good ideas for meals when you guys are here next month!!

When we lived in Laredo the next door neighbor had a ruby red grapefruit tree. He would give us kids all the grapefruit we could eat. Never had grapefruit that good again. We also had a tangerine tree and there are not words to describe the taste of a tree ripened tangerine.
